Hi! I'm Dana, a writer, `homeschool mom, and former fifth-grade teacher.
The spark that ignited the fire in me to create the Empowered Writing Curriculum came from a former student’s college application. I had taught him seven years prior, and he was about to graduate high school.
After attending his junior and senior years at Oklahoma Math and Science School, he had applied for and was accepted to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
He asked his mom to share his application essay with me and told me that he wouldn’t have been able to write it without the foundation he received in fifth grade. I could see he applied the foundation I taught in his essay — obviously, with many more details, but the foundation was there. At that moment, I knew I had created something impactful to help others.
I taught fifth-grade writing for 11 years, during which time, I created this foundational writing curriculum. I started from scratch, and each year, I improved the curriculum even more.
I’ve seen children overcome their fear, distaste, and boredom with writing. Many even learned to love it. Every kid I taught developed a stronger voice and became confident in their writing skills.
